I thought it was just me who wants to do everything but who tells herself to stick to one thing….it pleases me so much to know I am allowed to do it all without thinking the goal is financial recompense…. I just need to remember!!!
We are oceans apart geographically but all that you write Monique but all of this describes a creative life.
I had a teacher in grade school who was French, we called her Mademoiselle. The girls would meet with her to learn embroidery while the boys would learn woodworking. Mademoiselle would come with melt in your mouth bon bons and aprons that she made as an example and we would do embroidery on the pockets. I have the blue checked one still.
I have been thinking about picking up embroidery again. I think it would be a peaceful thing to do during what’s ahead for us here in the states; it might even be an impetus for political art.
It’s wonderful to hear about your process and see all your creative output! Bravo! It has taken me years to accept in myself that creativity takes turns, it’s not a straight line at all. But when you look back (I am 72) I see so many parallels.
This is so lovely to read Monique .. and chimes on so many levels. Barrie did indeed pop this in my eyeline and I’m very glad he did. For me it’s definitely a midlife discovery .. I have so many projects in mind or on the go! It’s wonderful!
What a journey you and your sewing skills have been on. Look at all you have created! I'm in awe. I just love everything you've dabbled in and shared here Monique. Naturally, I love GBSB too. Even though my skills are complete novice, my enthusiasm is pro. Sending this to my mother in law who like your mother is a lifelong sewing enthusiast.
Thanks so much Steph. A lovely read that brought back so many memories for me😊My grandmother had an amazing old tin full of buttons. Just wish I knew what happened to it! 🥰
I’ll be popping this in JoJo’s eyeline. She is friends with ‘Lizzy from Bristol’, a Sewing Bee participant/contestant (?) … J bought her sewing machine about this time last year and I can hear an echo in all you have described. The mindfulness, the gentle progress - learning from unpicking - there were baguette bags first but now JoJo’s wardrobe is changing as she adds tops and trousers … our grandson’s birthday is upcoming and there are plans for dinosaur sweatshirts etc. There have been two creative retreats with Lizzy and her band of enthusiasts. It truly is a discovery in all the best ways … I’m pretty certain JoJo’s mum made all their clothes (6 kids, it makes sense!). B

Update reply from my mother-in-law:

‘Midlife discovery’! Yes!

Not a midlife crisis but a midlife discovery. I love that!
I think of life as a continuous discovery.😊
I was just looking at Sashiko too - I'm not ready yet to go all in, but when the right project calls... And don't you love old sewing machines?
